How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost in Indianapolis?

Straight numbers on what a paver patio runs around Indianapolis, what moves the price up or down, and how pavers compare with poured concrete. Written by the crew at Arbuckle Outdoor Living.

If you’re pricing out a backyard patio, the first question is usually the simplest one: what’s the paver patio cost installed, all in? Around Indianapolis, most of the paver patios we build run between $18 and $25 per square foot installed. That number is for the finished patio. The pavers on the pallet are only part of it. Below, we walk through where your project might land in that range, what pushes it higher, and how pavers stack up against a poured slab.

How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost in Indianapolis?

Here’s the short answer. Most paver patios we install fall between $18 and $25 per square foot. Every project starts with a free quote, so you’ll see a real number for your yard before anything gets dug up.

Paver Patio Cost per Square Foot: What Goes Into the Price

A per-square-foot range is handy for budgeting, but no two yards are the same. These are the things that usually decide whether a patio lands near the low end or the high end.

Size and Shape

A simple rectangle goes down faster than a patio with curves, angles or multiple levels. Curves mean more cutting along the edges, and every cut takes time. Larger patios can spread some of the setup work over more square feet.

Site Prep and Access

A flat, open backyard is easier to work in than a sloped lot or a tight side yard. If the ground needs to be leveled, or if old material has to come out first, that adds labor. Equipment access matters too: a yard you can reach through a wide gate is a different job from one behind a narrow passage.

The Base

The base is buried, but it decides how long the patio lasts. A paver patio needs a well-compacted base underneath it and a plan for where water goes. Central Indiana has heavy clay soil and plenty of freeze-thaw cycles each winter. Skimp on the base, and pavers heave, sink and shift. Do it right, and the patio stays level through the seasons. If your yard already holds water, it may be worth pairing the patio with lawn drainage work.

Paver Style and Pattern

Pavers come in many sizes, colors and textures, and the pattern you lay them in changes the labor. A basic running bond goes quicker than a herringbone or a mix of sizes with a border. Your choice of paver and pattern is one of the easiest places to adjust the budget.

Extras

Steps, seat walls, built-in lighting, a fire pit or a walkway leading to the patio all add to the total. They also tend to be what makes a patio feel finished. If a fire pit or outdoor fireplace is on your list, building it with the patio is usually simpler than adding it later.

Paver Patio Cost Installed: A Rough Example

Let’s say you want a 12 by 16 foot patio off the back of the house. That’s 192 square feet. Multiply that by the range:

  • 192 sq ft x $18 = $3,456
  • 192 sq ft x $25 = $4,800

So a patio that size would land somewhere around $3,456 to $4,800. Treat this as rough math only, before any extras like steps, walls, lighting or a fire feature, and before we’ve seen your yard. Your free quote gives you the exact price.

Pavers or Poured Concrete?

We install pavers only, with no poured concrete. That said, here’s a fair look at both so you can decide what fits your yard and budget.

Upfront Cost

A plain poured slab often costs less up front than a paver patio of the same size. If budget is the only thing that matters, that’s worth knowing.

Cracking and Repairs

Poured slabs can crack as the ground moves, and freeze-thaw winters give the ground plenty of reasons to move. Once a slab cracks, patching it rarely blends in. Pavers are individual pieces with joints between them, so they flex a little with the ground. If a section settles, it can be lifted, re-leveled and reset with the same pavers.

Looks and Options

Pavers give you far more choices in color, shape, pattern and borders. You can match the house, add a contrasting edge or blend into a walkway. A slab can be stamped or stained, but the options are narrower.

When You Can Use It

Pavers on a proper base can be walked on as soon as they’re set and the joints are filled. A poured slab needs time to cure.

For most homeowners who plan to stay in their house, pavers are worth the difference. They hold up well on a good base, and they can be repaired cleanly.

Price of Pavers Installed vs Doing It Yourself

Some homeowners look at the price of pavers installed and consider doing it themselves. It can be done on a small project. Just know that most of the work is in the excavation and the base, not in setting the pavers on top. Renting a plate compactor, hauling base material and getting the grade right for drainage is where DIY patios usually go wrong. A patio that sinks in its second winter costs more to fix than it would have cost to build right.

Ways to Keep the Price in Check

  • Keep the shape simple. Straight lines and gentle curves cost less than lots of angles.
  • Pick a standard paver and pattern, then spend on a border if you want some detail.
  • Build in phases: the patio now, with room for a fire pit or seating wall later.
  • Plan the whole yard first so you don’t tear out new work down the road. Our hardscape installation team can help you sort out what goes where.
  • Ask about financing. Financing is available, which lets some homeowners do the project they want instead of a smaller one.
