Planning a Landscape Design: Where to Start

Thinking about a new yard but not sure where to begin? Arbuckle Outdoor Living shares the questions to answer first, plus a few ideas to get you started.

A new landscape usually starts as a feeling: the yard doesn’t work, or it doesn’t look the way you want. Turning that feeling into a landscape design plan is the step that makes everything else easier. A plan tells you what goes where, what gets built first and what it all adds up to. Here’s how we suggest homeowners around Indianapolis think it through before any landscape design work begins.

Why Start With a Landscape Design Plan

It’s tempting to start with one piece, like a patio this year and some shrubs next year. The trouble is that pieces added one at a time don’t always fit together. A patio ends up in the wrong spot, a tree gets planted where lighting wires should go, or a new bed blocks the path water used to take.

A plan for the whole yard prevents that. You can still build in phases. You’ll just know that each phase fits the next one.

How to Plan a Landscape Design: Start With How You Use the Yard

Before you think about plants or pavers, think about how you live outside. A few questions to answer:

  • Do you want room to entertain, cook or gather around a fire?
  • Do kids or pets need open lawn or a play area?
  • Is there a view you want to frame, or one you’d rather screen?
  • Do you want a yard that needs less upkeep?
  • Will you be outside mostly in the daytime, the evening or both?

Your answers shape everything. A family that grills every weekend needs a different yard than a couple who wants a quiet garden to look at from the kitchen window.

Look Closely at Your Site

Next, walk the yard and take notes. Pay attention to:

Sun and Shade

Notice which areas get full sun and which stay shaded most of the day. Sun and shade decide which plants will thrive, and where a patio will be comfortable on a July afternoon.

Slopes and Water

Watch where water goes after a heavy rain. Soggy spots, runoff and low areas need a plan before anything is planted or built. Central Indiana’s heavy clay soil drains slowly, so drainage is worth thinking about early. Slopes may call for a retaining wall or terracing.

What's Already There

List what you want to keep: mature trees, a good shrub, an existing walkway. Then list what has to go. Working with what you have usually saves money.

How People Move

Think about the routes people actually take: from the driveway to the front door, from the back door to the garage, from the patio to the grill. Paths and walkways should follow those routes, not fight them.

Set Priorities and a Budget

Most people have more ideas than budget, and that’s normal. Rank what matters most. Maybe the patio comes first, then the plantings, then lighting. A good plan shows the whole picture and lets you build it in stages.

Landscape design cost depends on the size of the yard and how much is involved, so it’s hard to give one number. Every project with us starts with a free quote, and financing is available if you’d rather do more of the plan at once.

Landscaping Ideas to Start From

If you’re staring at a blank yard, these landscape design ideas are good starting points:

  • Layered beds. Taller shrubs in back, mid-size plants in the middle and low flowers or groundcover in front. It looks full and works along a fence or foundation.
  • A defined patio. A paver patio gives the yard a center and a place to sit. Add a fire pit and it becomes the spot everyone ends up.
  • A curving path. A walkway that bends through the yard feels more inviting than a straight line.
  • Lighting along paths and trees. Low-voltage lights along a walkway, under a tree or around a patio make the yard usable after dark.
  • Trees for shade and privacy. A well-placed tree can shade a patio and block a view at the same time.
  • Fresh mulch and clean edges. Even a simple yard looks finished with crisp bed edges and a fresh layer of mulch.

Pick two or three ideas that match how you use the yard, and build the plan around them.

Think About Plants Early

Plants take time to fill in, so where they go matters. Choose plants that suit your sun, shade and soil, and give them room to reach their full size. Spring and fall are both good planting seasons in central Indiana. When it’s time to plant, our plant and garden installation work covers trees, shrubs and flower beds. For new plantings, ask about our watering plans and warranty.

Don't Forget the Evening

A lot of yards get used most after work. Lighting is easier to plan before beds and patios go in, since wires can be run while the ground is open. Landscape lighting along paths, steps and trees makes the yard safer and adds a lot of character at night.

From Plan to Finished Yard

A plan is only as good as the work that follows it. With us, the company that designs your yard also builds it. Our landscape installation covers beds, plantings and full yard makeovers, and we build the patios, walls and walkways too.
